The first reference known to the author for this medal is in the Snowden's medal book of 1861. That it was contemporary
with Andrew Jackson, however, is shown by a letter of December16, 1869, from Director Pollock to the Postmaster General, in which a small silver Jackson medal was sent which had been "issued shortly after his inauguration". Pollock went on to note that the profile likeness had been taken from an engraving done by James B. Longacre about 1830
If the medals were actually struck in 1833 or 1834, as is suggested by Pollock, the dies were lost to mint control within a short time because they are not listed on Peale's die inventory of 1841 - 1854
