Captain Thomas H. Hobron built the first narrow gauge railroad in Maui to help transport sugar from the plantations to Kahului's port. The railroad began operations in July 1879, the year Hobron began issuing these tokens. There are two varieties of the 12 1/2 cent denomination, one with six stars on the reverse such as this example, with the other variety displaying two stars.
