1875 California Fractional 25c BG-798 PCGS MS65 Uniface (UNIQUE, Normally R5)
Every now and then an artifact of the post-California Gold Rush will surface that seems to have been part experiment, part mistake by those who manufactured them. The present Fractional Gold piece is no exception, although there's enough detail on the obverse of the coin for us to have identified it as a BG-798 - and really in exceptional condition!
We've also seen these kinds of unique rarities go up for sale on platforms like Ebay for as much as $25,000 or more.
Obv: 13 smaller stars. 1st star above the bust point; the 7th star is between and above the 3rd & 4th feathers of the headdress. 1875 under the head. The 18 is higher than the 75.
Rev: 1-4 DOLLAR CAL inside the wreath; There is a berry to left of the D. A berry touches the bottom right of the R, although on the present specimen these details are completely obfuscated.
