1853 California Fractional 25c BG-209 PCGS MS64 LOW RARITY 7 Ex.Totheroh Collection

1853 California Fractional 25c BG-209 PCGS MS64 LOW RARITY 7 Ex.Totheroh Collection

Highest in the Population data! An exceptional rarity issued in 1853 by Frontier, Deviercy Co., successor to Joseph Brothers’ coining business in 1853. This is an extremely rare California Fractional piece as there are only 10 recorded specimens, probably some duplication, none reported since. With the assistance of the records kept by Jack Totheroh, we count 22 auction appearances since 1956, the most recent being a AU53 offered in August, 2017 and a MS62 offered in September, 2017. This issue is absolutely known to have actually been issued in 1853 since two (2) examples were recovered from the wreck of the S.S. Winfield Scott, which sailed December 1, 1853. The present example is a lovely, immaculate Very Choice Brilliant Uncirculated PCGS MS64 and is thus far the Finest Known according to the certification services, but the Mike Brownlee Texas Collection specimen last offered in 1992 might be a contender. The Jay Roe example graded MS63.
