The uniface copper "die trials" were restrikes made by private individuals circa 1897-1898. Anecdotal evidence suggests the issues were produced to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Mormon settlement in Salt Lake City, but no documentary evidence has been found. The "die trials" were struck from original dies used on Mormon gold coinage during the Gold Rush era. The dies were repurchased by the Mormon Church in 1909 and are preserved in the Deseret Museum today.
