Reverse: A Memorial of the Washington Cabinet May 1859 within a wreath of olive.

This medal was struck purely to add Director James Ross Snowden’s personal contribution to the large and growing list of Washington medals struck in the country. It may have been use at first for trading purposes in order to acquire other Washington medals for the mint cabinet. The medal was first struck within a few weeks after the date it bears.
